Believe me, I'm trying. Still very much enjoying the character and almost finished episode 3.
Honestly, I'm way more disappointed that they don't have her voice at all realistically high-pitched than the nudity factor.

Right? lets just be happy we got something. Especially since new shrinking and giant content are scarce. and cuz of the strike, no one has gotten to even make projects based on such.Aussie_Lurker wrote: ↑Fri Sep 29, 2023 8:17 amWow, so many Debbie Downers in this thread, always haooy to see the glass as "half empty". Yeah, the lack of nudity bummed me out too, but this was still amazing.
They still might do it, just ignore the weight loss stuff, after all, this is the Boys, where many ignore the messy to acknowledge the cool.
Yeah. Strange and exciting times. Anime has done all sorts of weird fetish shit and made it the entire plot of an series. It's nice we are finally seeing something on mainstream American television.
This, so much this...
Yes, you can live in hope, but you know what they say about that, right?
You're both spot on. It seems to be Amazon's rule, especially with what we've seen from 'The Boys' and 'I'm A Virgo.' Men's nudity appears to be no problem, but not so for women.Little Sally wrote: ↑Fri Sep 29, 2023 9:05 pmBut to expect to see anything "steamier" with a shrinking fetish theme, might just be a tad too hopeful in a mainstream production.
True, but I really hope they keep this to just SW for once, and let the moment resonate without distraction from the astronomically more popular crowd.
I'm guessing it's a nudity clause thing, she can be filmed behind but pasties and the such.Little Sally wrote: ↑Fri Sep 29, 2023 9:05 pm
Seems to me it's one of those things (this series) that's slipped under the radar of the feminist movements, so far at least. So I wouldn't be counting my chickens anything better will develop from it. And as far as the penis scene is concerned (which I thought was quite funny and intended to be), I think they get away with it for the humour involved, AND the fact she isn't naked. But to expect to see anything "steamier" with a shrinking fetish theme, might just be a tad too hopeful in a mainstream production.
Goodness stake, let us have something for once GTS Folk. You had Termite.
It's not just Amazon, it seems to be an unwritten rule in all of American media today. I've heard some movie/tv critics mentioning this.
Trueish but I think male butts are more common and more of a gag. Plus don't forget, that movie is CGI so that ass might be CG. I don't think it's a WOKE thing and more women having more control over their bodies in movies post MeToo.pokonota wrote: ↑Fri Sep 29, 2023 10:28 pmIt's not just Amazon, it seems to be an unwritten rule in all of American media today. A prominent example is the latest Thor movie, where it's played as a joke that Thor is undressed against his will and exposed naked to a multitude, but if the same were done to Natalie Portman's character, there would've been a massive outrage
Are those really different? 'Woke' isn't a bad thing. It just gets ridiculous when the pendulum has clearly swung so far in the other direction, this time in the literal form of swinging dicks on screen with the absence of virtually any women's nudity.eddiegiantman wrote: ↑Fri Sep 29, 2023 10:36 pmI don't think it's a WOKE thing and more women having more control over their bodies in movies post MeToo.
Which that is good but also I feel we might have a lot of missed a lot of chances since.
rscholar wrote: ↑Fri Sep 29, 2023 10:46 pmI have Prime and skimmed Emma's parts through the first 3 episodes. I don't know how much I want to get into this discussion since I feel there's a lot to unpack here, but this was a very interesting experience.
First and foremost, I agree with Min's assessment regarding impact: whatever your feelings about sexiness or preferences, what we just saw was monumental. The effects were fantastic, the character in question isn't a throwaway blank slate, and someone somewhere had the imagination and pull to have studio staff write, direct, and air a mainstream production in which a 2-inch tall woman straddles a guy's junk as a plot point! While I feel Emma's conflict, taken broadly, isn't reinventing the wheel - aspiring starlet harms herself to conform to expectations and erase her identity - the more I mull the symbolism and how everything - size-change, her social media persona, the purging trigger - intertwines with each other, the more impressed I am by what I feel is incredible attention to detail. I could write a mini essay on the themes here (many reviewers likely will and hit most of the points I'm thinking) especially as an SW fan, but that's not front and center on my mind right now. In any case, I'm sincerely happy this exists and I'm looking forward to seeing more.
That all being said...
Looking some early reviews for the show, I came across a headline that said in essence: "It's a show that should be having more fun." I thought that was weird considering some of the crazy stuff in The Boys universe and this was going to be about young adults with wild powers. I was prepared for angst and dark moments and some nasty things. What surprised me most, at least with Emma's story, is how goddamn bleak it all is. Yes, her intro with the gerbil is adorable and she's a sweetheart (if a bit dirtier than I pictured) with charisma and presence. And then *everything* revolves around how secretly miserable she is - the disappointing sex, constantly reminding people she has a real name, her asshole mom, her secret trigger being revealed. I knew I would feel sorry for her going into this, but I actually started feeling a bit guilty. I mean, outside the painful trigger process, does she even *like* having powers? Would she want to keep getting small if she no longer required a trigger? It was only during her stealth mission in ep 3 that I started seeing that adventurous spirit shrinking can provide and things brightened a little.
The sex scene in particular is emblematic for 2 reasons: I call this a legitimate plot point because it subtly informs more of Emma's struggle - Liam(?) only sees her as her celebrity persona and what her powers can offer him. His "fantasy," whatever the writers' internal intentions may have been, came across as him just stroking his ego - "Is this the biggest dick you've ever seen? Say it!" just came off, to me, like a jock thing. And remember, Emma presumably got nothing out of this: she was a toy and her need for pleasure meant nothing to him ("anatomy problems" my ass. Dude, you have a working pinky finger- use it!). This, to me, actually points to this *not* being some kind of writer's clandestine SW insert. Despite the sheer outrageousness of the scene, Emma being tiny is just a means to an end symbolically - the woman in question could have been a (normal sized) washed up 50+ year old actress pleasing a fan and the result would've been the same.
The 2nd reason, and honestly the most transcendent for me, was the scene before this when they're making out: I watched a young man ask in a shy bedroom voice if a young woman he wanted to have sex with would get small for him. In a real-life roleplaying session, that could be me. It was just so...real for a second....and then he turns out to be an asshole.
