Linzey was a soldier in her "Borrower" community before she was captured by a "being", who forced to fight in the underground gladiatorial "sport" of Beast Battling. Her formidable skill in defeating rats, snakes, tarantula and other nightmarish creatures, honed by years of protecting her community from such monsters, soon was making her owner rich as she was the only female Borrower still surviving on the circuit. Having to fight these animals in front of these drunken and despicable "beings", placing bets on or against her was egregious enough, but her slovenly owner's salacious way of celebrating each victory left her feeling defiled and humiliated.
