Non SW Art
You have this thing in N America about not 'tooting your own horn', but I think that is silly because we should have the possibility of sharing our achievements. You may be surprised owing to my general lack of talent, that I have been a professional artist for 18 months. 2 years ago I got into Falmouth University which is now the highest ranked art college in the UK on both the prestigious Drawing course and the Fine Art course. I didn't take up a place on the advice of my care co-coordinator who said the combination and travel and pressured atmosphere could have serious consequences. Instead I took the pre-university course that was run like a university course, by current and former university lecturers to university standards. Despite having an attendance of around 50% and having much of my time at college asleep, I got a clean sweep of distinctions in all of the modules and every single component assessment with the the added comment that I had surpassed even distinction level. . Anyway, I'm here to share some of my artwork. Even if you don't like it, it may reveal something interesting

Re: Non SW Art
I'm facilitating a course in abstract art in a few days. In my intro I show how the Raft of the Medusa (a great classicist painter from the early 19th century, Gericault) can be simplified into abstract form
7 stages
1. Simplify the colours towards primary and secondaries
2. Develop figures and other objects into simplified forms
3.Continue process and start outlining major compositional structures

4. Start developing a range of major forms
5. Isolate and deepen colour field of major shapes
6. start looking how the new shapes interact - e.g. imitation (similar shapes in opposition) augmentation and diminution - vary dimensions of objects - e.g. small triangle relating to a large, development of form - mutation, colour theory - juxtapose major forms, joining via minor forms and lines, shapes, etc..
7. Does the juxtaposition of formal elements tell a story? What do you see?

Re: Non SW Art
The original by Gericault - there is strong relationship between classical painting and modernist abstraction
The idea is that the composition generates more of a deeper response than the actual figures. If we concentrate on developing composition, form, shape, line, colour, texture we can engender a more intense emotional response.

I'm not sure this is the appropriate forum for his work. I'll give that some thought though.

If people visiting this board like it, it must be the right board for it

(Well okay, maybe I should make a sub category for now SW art or something like that)

Re: Non SW Art
Not the best picture of it.
He did this with water colors in the 1950's I think. In the late 1890's he survived 3rd degree burns all over his body. Art was the one thing he could do while he was hospitalized. The nursing staff supplied him with paper and rigged a pencil to his bandaged hand.
