Thinking of Starting a DeviantArt, Looking for Advice

Post by rscholar » Fri Jul 16, 2021 2:39 pm

I'd mainly do Photoshop collages and some outreach for ShrinkFan. I'm not looking to making it "professional" necessarily and wouldn't have a regular posting schedule. I imagine there's no real investment or risk involved (I technically already have an account but just use it for browsing), but for anyone here who has a more active page of their own, do you have any advice or suggestions to consider? I'd appreciate it!

I only recently started posting on my account, but if possible, try to use as many tags on the images as you can. I'm sure that will help make more people aware of what you're posting.

I concur and just know their bots are very attuned to finding male genitalia. Artistic nudity is ok, but if they sense you are doing pornography they will quickly remove your work. Also if you do more adult work, always ensure your mature flag is set. Besides this, I agree with the tagging comment.

Thanks. My stuff is usually very tame - usually process, some loose clothes, some morphs - and doesn't really involve nudity. Still, I should probably flag them as such since they'd be adjacent to fetish genres and I plan to favorite a bunch of stuff from Mature artists.

I've also been thinking of doing a mini-blog on DA (maybe elsewhere?) with something like "Great Moments in Shrinking History" where I talk about specific size-change in media and examine what makes it a classic or a frustrating misfire. I look back at some missed opportunities that drove me crazy and think about when Min wrote up those awesome reviews and I realize there's a dearth in that kind of content. That and the collages would all be sporadic and not on any real schedule, but part of the reason I'm thinking of doing this is to preserve some of my thoughts and work - pics and very long diatribes I've posted here have disappeared and I miss seeing them. TL:DR, I'm a narcissist looking for a storage unit :).

I like that idea. I say go for it.

Hope you don't mind the bump, but I had some follow-up thoughts about this.

I've been giving this serious consideration and I wrote a quick list of everything I've wanted to cover, from the basics like Totally Spies and Honey I Shrunk the Kids in all of its iterations to how Downsizing and Eureka wasted their potential. I don't know what would be considered a reasonable posting schedule, but I've got over 150 entries just on SW and could stretch it if I include SM or other size-based material and doing 1 post a week would put me out over 3 years at least, plus I'd certainly welcome any further suggestions.

I know I said DeviantArt would be a good platform and maybe I could still do it to start out, but now I'm wondering if I should just make a blog, especially if I want to include snippets via jpegs and gifs. If so, what platform might be appropriate? Also, while it's not my main reason for undertaking this, I wonder if said platform could be monetized (mainly with ad-space, I don't want to do donations and don't feel I could offer any incentives to make a Patreon).

Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I have had mine going on 14 years :) It's doing quite well. Big increase in traffic since coming "here".

Sometimes a blog discussing the movies you mentioned and many others (ISW) comes to mind as a fail; are better than the more kinky aspects of SW.

As in, discussing a work on an emotional and artistic level rather than simply if it's just sexually appealing? Because that is kind've what I'm going for. I mean, for me shrinking involves adventure, wonder, and heavy emotion for changes of circumstances and sense of self. It's obviously nice if it indeed is also sexy, but focusing only on that misses so much more.

One of my favorite diatribes, involving a back-and-forth with Scridam, was comparing and contrasting the stories "The Tiny Wife" and "The Miniturist." They're both fairly similar - wife's shrinking uncovers marital tension - but handle their premises so differently they become complete opposites. Each had their strengths and weaknesses and made me wonder if a really good story was possible working with the best of each. Neither are "sexy" (though the wife from "Miniturist" has a hidden affair with a shrunken man), but they depict shrunken women with such detail and emotion that they were gripping and inspiring in their own ways. I ended up writing the equivalent of a mini essay on it, but it was lost in the forum reshuffle. That's a major reason I want to try this series.

If possible, a blog. You can also launch a Ko-Fi where people give you tips.

Is this DeviantArt place just for folks who do art, or can you just join it to look at things?

Browsing is fine. I do it a bunch even AFTER I started posting art.

I really like that idea - I understand it's ideal for writers and I'm not looking to do anything extravagant.

My only other question at this point is how to discuss certain subjects when they involve child characters or youth-skewing media, especially live-action. It'll be a study in shrinking in the media but it will in fact be couched in fetishism - like what about these shows, movies, etc. came off as exciting and/or arousing (I remember reading a piece somewhere saying we as a fetish community were "ungrateful" over ISW being disappointing, but....well, most us probably wouldn't have cast Lily Tomlin - even Minimizer said as much). Especially in discussing filming techniques and visuals, it will likely come as sexual - shrinking out of clothes, power dynamics, a lot of the stuff we talk about here that make the fetish what it is. How can I do this when it involves young characters, especially when shrinking as a genre is increasingly considered "kid stuff?" I mean, AiW is going to be given no matter what since it's like *the* story that's impacted so many of us, but obviously a lot them center on a young girl. And what about, say, the animated Sabrina episode "Shrink to Fit?" Both characters slowly shrink out of their clothes, panic at the realization that they're shrinking, then eventually zip down so small they have to use socks for makeshift clothing. Trope-wise, it's kind've awesome, but they're in middle-school. There are a good number of those kind of moments that would be best to avoid and as a rule I want to steer clear of them, but for those that are good enough or have something special that they warrant talking about, it seems tricky to try.

Thank you, that's good to know.

I feel like I'm missing out on some interesting things so I'll look into signing up. :)

If you do a blog, you might wanna separate them or keep it clean.

Sure, and I don't consider my style particularly "dirty" anyhow so it shouldn't be too much of a problem. I just think that, while Sabrina TAS could be reasonably cut from the subject lineup, it would be disappointing not to talk about the major ones like AiW or HISTK, at least directly. I suppose, though, that anyone interested in this at all would know enough about the "classics" that this could be tailored to more obscure things like Min did. Like I said, I have a solid list so cutting some stuff shouldn't be too bad.

Simple - don’t. If your account is fetish related, don’t post content involving kids. That includes content where the actress may be of age but the character they are playing isn’t (eg Wednesday)

It’s one thing to have an account relating to the trope of giants and shrinking and discussing child characters in this completely G way, but if your channel is ever meant to titillate or be interpreted in that manner, then just don’t.
