Artwork Estimations

Post by starslayer » Wed May 10, 2023 4:06 pm

Greetings.
I have an interesting idea I've been wondering if you all would be willing to assist me in.
We all like collages and artwork, but do we ever take the time to truly understand how small these women are?
To all the math and science nerds out there, let's make this board be one where we post pictures not just to appreciate them, but to come up with a rough estimate of how big or small the depicted woman is in real life.
(Yes this does assist with writing my story)

For starters, assuming that the foot is around a US size 7, how small is the sw?

Assuming it is a us woman size 7 shoe and she looks about roughly the same size of the foot 9.25 inches approximately maybe a little less.

I'd say it's easy enough to judge the size of a shrunken woman if she's placed next to familiar objects, or being handheld.

Or did you mean guessing the size she normally is, but after she's been reduced in size? (in real life, as you said) If it's the latter, I don't really see the point in knowing how short or tall she is, when the aim is to portray her as small in an artwork.

But do enlighten me if I'm missing something here. :)

My intent is to divulge the depicted size of the woman. If we see for example, an image of a sw next to a soda can, my hope is that we can calculate the size of the woman (the tiny woman, mind you) using the soda can as a reference point.
I'm not a math person (as college is showing me), and that's why I need your help.

That is what I like to do in my images. I like to use objects in my images to judge size that I know the size of. I like the use of a ruler as well that way I can be exact.

Here is an example photo. I know the exact size of the stuffed animal, so I can judge approximately what size she is. I go around measuring lots of things to try to get the size I want!

Forgive me, but why is it necessary to divulge (describe?) the size of a shrunken woman in an artwork, when the viewer can see for themselves how small she's supposed to be? Or is this just a "nerd" thing haha! (nothing wrong with being nerdy of course I hasten to add). :)

Alright, I can see the point if you're writing a story where you've described the woman as being a certain size, then you could use a piece of art to illustrate that. I've done that myself and it's helpful and adds interest.

But anyway, Laboki seems to be on your wavelength and provided an image, and this is my offering with the use of a ruler prop.

This is why I prefer handhelds or at least a big's hand in close proximity to the tiny. You would only have to determine if the hand belongs to a large man or a smaller hand of a woman or a very small hand of a child. My fist is approximately 4 inches high. So using this as a guide, if this hand belonged to me or any other average to larger male, she would be around 6 inches tall.

I understand that. I am also a nerd. It helps me bring into the real world. I can’t visually imagine things. So making pictures and measuring and numbers brings things to life for me.
Hands are a great tool. My palm is around 3 1/2 inches.

Yes handhelds are where it's at for me too.

This hand (plus the other) is around three and a half inch across at the knuckles, so we're talking just in excess of Barbie size with this lady. Possibly 13" (ish)

Thank you both, that's kind. Just for the record, the main reason I began appearing in my own work was mainly for convenience, and to cut down the time having to search the web for suitable stock. Though admittedly it is good fun being in a picture, which helps bring the fantasy to life for me. Though more recently I've also featured a good friend who has been kind enough to pose for collages, and it sometimes causes confusion with folks assuming that it's me (mainly on Deviant Art where I post most of my work). So to help deal with that confusion, I did a piece where we both appear together. I always refer to her as Jenny btw, which of course isn't her real name.

There's a description below the pics and feel free to comment on them (on Stash), it'll be better than taking up space on this thread.

(the two of us together) https://sta.sh/09jhu5n9ti2

(Jenny in a tough pose to hold) https://sta.sh/0220jxz70nu1

(my current avatar) https://sta.sh/01bfqptuqyu8

Ps. To keep in the spirit of the thread's topic. I visualise the first two pics as portraying Barbie sized women (11 to 12 inches)
The avatar pic I'm not sure (not sure how big a bottle of A1 sauce is). Maybe I'm around 6 or 7 inches on that one. Some research needed lol!

Even with math, working things out from photos is a difficult thing to do. For example, you need to know if a wide or telephoto lens was used to determine what distance from the camera would result in change in number of pixels. Also, if you can't determine the contact point between two images you can get something that is equivalent to forced perspective.

Image

This is actual forced perspective, but it shows the problem with analyzing images to determine scale.

Let me guess, the woman was actually just 4 inches tall, but so close to the camera that it looked like she might be half the size of that man?
