Mario Kart: Virtuality!

Post by coolguy69 » Wed Nov 30, 2022 9:08 am

Staying true to their inventive nature, Nintendo came out with a feature for their new console: Virtuality! Your body and consciousness would be temporarily transported into the game and you could play the game in the same manner that virtual reality works. Except now it was “actual” virtual reality. After the game ended, you would be phased back to “real” life, with some obvious failsafe features to combat any phase-into-reality bugs that physics was known for in the development of the console. In other words, it had been tested and perfected.
There was only one problem: it was too perfect.
Aaron and Lauren launched at the opportunity to best each other in this new console the day it came out. As Mario Kart 8 veterans, they raced against each other a lot. They went toe to toe, trying their best to learn each track, the mechanics, and master the game to beat the other. While it was competitive during the race, there were no hard feelings at the end – they laughed off a loss and poked fun during a win. A casual competition.
Bringing the console home, they grinded the new game, Mario Kart: Virtuality!, first playing the “normal” mode, with Gamecube adapters and controllers. Again, they were evenly matched. In their first two Grand Prix’s, Lauren finished 2 and 3 points ahead of Aaron respectively, hitting some well-timed lap 3 Bullet Bills to steal away some victories. And while it was a fair competition, Aaron was getting a little frustrated that he could never quite pull ahead. So, secretly, he decided to use cheats.
Cheats are codes you can put into a Mario Kart game. One such cheat was his personal favorite: The permanent Thundercloud shrink. If a player pulled a Thundercloud item, it would at first behave as normally – it would follow a player around, giving them a boost. At the end, normally, the player would be shrunk temporarily. But he put in a cheat that made it so that shrunk state was permanent, for the rest of the race. He thought it fair enough, if not humorous, to see her reaction to it – and perhaps claim his first Grand Prix on the new console!
Revving up to get into the game for real, they played now in the Virtuality! mode. As they grabbed the Virtuality! controllers, and pressed “A”, Aaron and Lauren were, literally, physically-altered into the video game. They selected their karts in this virtual reality, amazed by the realistic nature of their experience. They then got teleported into the Grand Prix for their first race. And while they both struggled to learn how to hit the gas at the beginning of the race, they both quickly figured out how to steer around their bikes. Even at 150cc on a new game mode, they were going at the CPUs, using well-timed items and game knowledge to overcome any unknowns of the new tracks and game mode. They continued races two and three, and both became natural experts with the controls.
In the final race of the Grand Prix, Lauren was ahead by 2 points, so Aaron needed to finish a few positions higher to take it down. And on lap 2, Lauren heard that dreaded “RRRT RRRT” sound, the pulling of a Thundercloud.
“Shit!” she exclaimed, looking up and confirming the predicament. Her mind quickly analyzed the situation – she was in 3rd place, and 4th place was far behind her, and Aaron was in 6th. It was too risky to try to pass it off behind her. She could just use the boost of the Thundercloud and shrink temporarily, and they would likely be neck-and-neck at that point, to where on lap 3 she could probably pull it out.
So she zoomed ahead, using a shortcut that took her to 2nd place with the boost, and predictably, her kart and her self shrank down to ½ of her height from the shock.
And then, Aaron was struck by a random green shell, and fell to 7th. Lap 3 started for her, and she started to smell another victory.
But as lap 3 continued: What happened? Why was everything still bigger? Was there a video game bug? Lauren began to wonder when the shock would wear off, when she would grow back to normal size. And then, being tinier and slower than everyone else in the race, she fell behind. 3rd place. 4th place. With only ½ of a lap to go, her shrunken state was her only barrier to beating Aaron. But she pushed forward with dogged determination, as it was the only thing she could do at that point. A video game bug was not going to let her stop trying!
Aaron raced ahead and saw Lauren – she was absolutely teeny-sized! And, knowing his cheat had worked, he raced closer and closer to her, but didn’t pass her. He merely loomed over the tiny woman racing in front of her.
“Hahahaha” he bellowed, playfully letting off the gas as to continue to loom behind her.
“Stop laughing!” Lauren squeaked out, turning around, and craning her neck up at him. “There’s a stupid bug in this game mode they haven’t fixed yet.” She noticed how much larger he seemed – Virtuality! made her feel literally like a tiny person! Her feelings of fear and excitement of the prospect of being so tiny made her blush.
“Yeah, unfortunate”, he said, now putting his foot on the gas of his bike, colliding into the back-side of her. Game mechanics determined what would happen – at her shrunken size, she was bounced 5 feet to the left, into the grass, and he hardly moved an inch from the collision.
“Hey!” she squeaked. She slowly drove out of the grass she had been pushed into and continued to fall behind him at her tiny, shrunken stature.
But having wasted a few seconds with his playful distraction, Aaron finished 4th, and Lauren pulled a Golden Mushroom, which she could use while tiny. And while its boost only brought her back to “normal” speed, blasting ahead through the now-enormous course - it was enough to secure 5th place, one place behind Aaron, and she won the cup, one point ahead overall.
“Yes!!” she squeaked out. “I still beat you, doucheboy! Haha!” Custom victory quotes were one of the best perks of the new game. Aaron’s moral victory was that he heard it at a very high pitch, which was cute to him, even if he lost.
They were then prompted by Virtuality! to finish the game and prepare for transport back to the real world.
And once they were brought back to reality-reality, they both immediately noticed something was different, as she looked up at him, and he looked down at her.
Lauren was still shrunk.

I really love this story. I almost wished it continued with Aaron teasing her more.

Thanks :) I enjoy creating realistic scenarios with openness to what happens next. I'm sure she'll feel a bit teased and embarrassed whether he does tease her or not XD
